About the Artist

JOSEPH WELLER - Biography

My Background

All my paintings begin with a black and white sketch, usually done on site, with charcoal pencil and gum erasers.  For my paintings, I work primarily with oil on canvas but recently I have been using graffiti spray paints, combining them with my traditional oils, and brushwork to expand my range.

One of the things that inspires me most is the use of color:  bold, rich, expressive, harmonic color, which I use to draw the viewer into my works.

Color is the primary force in the works of the artists who continue to  inspire me: the grace and fluid beauty of Henri Matisse, the solitude and light of Edward Hopper, the radiant, expressive colors of Vincent Van Gogh, the spontaneity and pure energy of Willem De Kooning, the peace and calm of Pierre Bonnard, the whimsicality of Wayne Thiebaud, and the visceral images of Max Beckmann.
